Ship editing How do you change or make new ships?

In the game, how did they do bensons lancer, hawkes mc, and other admiral ships? Did they use a special program? And can I make my own ships and custom name them?
4 Lessons learned from CFW:
Protect your allies.
Build different kinds of ships.
And Defend well, but dont waste all your CP on it.
Try to build bases in other systems

I'm pretty sure those "hero" units can be accessed with the mod tool. And with the mod tool, you can probably alter stats and rename 'em, but to design your own ships, do you mean create from scratch? In that case, you'd need Maya or some other modeling program. Then after completion of the unit, you'd have to import it into the game. Most games, if not all, work somewhat similar to this route. Hope this helps.
